Chateau Montelena was founded in St. Helena, California in 1882 by Alfred L. Tubbs. His family made wine up until prohibition, and it was owned by his family until 1958, when it was sold to Jeanie and Yort Wing Frank. In 1968, Lee and Helen Paschich purchased the property along with James Barrett, who began making wines again under the Montelena name in 1972. Four years later, the brand won first place at the Judgment of Paris for their chardonnay. The company remains owned by the Barrett family today.
