Almaden Vineyards was founded in San Jose, California in 1852 by Éthienne Thée. The winery was passed to his son-in-law, Charles LeFranc, and then to his son-in-law, Paul Masson. It was then sold to Charles M. Jones in 1930. When Jones died in 1940, it was taken over by Louis Benoist. It was later sold to National Distillers and Chemical Corporation, which held it until 1987, when they sold the brand to Heublein, a subsidiary of RJR Nabisco, for $128 million. In 1994, Almaden was purchased by Canandaigua Brands, which later became Constellation Brands in 2000. It was finally sold once more to The Wine Group in 2008.
