Chalone Vineyard was founded by Richard Graff in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California in 1965 by Richard Graff and his brothers John Graff and Peter Wilson-Graff. In 1971 they were joined by Phillip Woodward to form Chalone Wine Group, shortly before one of their vintages scored 3rd place at the Judgment of Paris. In 2005, Chalone Wine Group was purchased by Diageo, which held the company until 2016 when it was sold to Foley Family Wines.
