Inglenook Winery was founded in Rutherford, California in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum. The winery closed during prohibition, but was reopened by Niebaum’s widow when the amendment was repealed. In 1939, Niebaum’s great-nephew John Daniel Jr. took over the company.
In 1964, the company was sold to Allied Grape Growers. They held it until 1975, when most of the land was sold to filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, and the brand was sold to Heublein Inc. That company was bought by RJ Reynolds Nabisco in 1982, which then sold it to Grand Metropolitan in 1987. They then sold the Inglenook label to Canandaigua Brands in 1994, which renamed itself to Constellation Brands in 2000. In 2008, Constellation sold Inglenook and several other brands to The Wine Group for $134 million. Three years later, the brand was sold to Coppola, once again reuniting the land with the brand.
