Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards was founded in Sonoma, California in 1973 by Brice Cutrer Jones. In 1999, he sold an 80% interest in the business to liquor company Brown-Forman for $125 million. Jones stayed on as President and CEO, but was ousted two years later.

In 2024, Brown-Forman sold the brand to Duckhorn Portfolio, which at the time was publicly traded. Later that year, however, private equity group Butterfly Equity took the company private for $1.95 billion.
