Substance Wine was founded in Walla Walla, Washington in 2006 by Waters Winery. In 2014, the winery was purchased by Doug Roskelley and Mike Tembreull, who declined to acquire the Substance wine brand along with it. The brand was subsequently sold to Charles Smith, who held the label until 2024, when it was sold to O’Neill Vintners & Distillers.
